N: Technical supply plants and other infrastructure

Areas zoned for technical supply plants and infrastructure are for major technical supply plants, such as hydro plants or other supply and manufacturing industries not based on the exploitation of live resources. In addition, the areas can accommodate major infrastructure connections in the open country.

Overall provisions for each subarea can be accessed below.

Provisions and subareas

The overall provisions for each subarea are the basis for the municipality's granting of area allotments and building permits.

General Provisions

The general provisions apply to all subareas of the municipalities in towns, settlements and open country areas. The provisions are general and do not consider the local conditions in the subareas.

N areas are classified into:

  • N1: Technical supply plants
  • N2: Infrastructure.

As required, jetties or other port facilities and helistops can be built to provide the necessary connections to technical supply plants and infrastructure etc. It is possible to build roads or paths in connection with technical plants and buildings in these subareas. Likewise, it is permitted to build additional technical supply plants, such as electricity plants, water, telecommunications and sewerage facilities to supply local areas. Establishment of technical plants for freshwater abstraction, wastewater discharge and major energy supply plants requires planning permission from the Government of Greenland.

N1: Technical supply plants

N1 areas are zoned for major technical plants such as hydro plants and water lakes. Year-round dwellings, measuring stations and camps can be built in connection with the industries and technical plants located in the individual subareas. Inherently, such industries will depend on local infrastructure and technical supplies. A hydro plant will per se be able to produce electricity for local supply. Recreational huts or holiday cottages cannot be built in these areas, as they are reserved for the activities of the above-mentioned industries and supply plants. A limited number of hunting and emergency huts can be built in the catchment areas of water lakes serving hydro plants as long as the huts are not located near a technical plant.

N2: Infrastructure

N2 areas are zoned for transport corridors and traffic zones for motorised vehicles in the open country. Motorised vehicles mean any motorised crawler or wheel-mounted vehicle capable of driving on ice, snow, in mountains/hills and in other natural landscapes.

Corridors and traffic zones are reserved for professional driving related to industrial activities as specified by municipal by-laws.

Distances to the coastline and other natural habitats

According to the current legislation on the protection of nature, Act No. 29 of 18 December 2003, placing buildings, planting, cultivation and drainage or other changes in the terrain is prohibited within a distance of 100 meters from salt lakes and saline lakes, trout rivers, hot springs and the coastline.

Recreational and tourist huts can only be placed closer than 100 meters from the said habitats, if this is determined in an addendum to the town plan containing detailed provisions for the subarea concerned.

The Government of Greenland may in special cases grant exemptions from the above distances.
